Goal Setting for 2012

Goals Setting for 2012 – The 10 Steps for Success

Step 1: Tap into your passion. This year more than ever – you must make sure you are doing what you love and what means the most to you. If you are going to invest your time building a business, or being self employed, then this is your chance to make money from your passion. Is it not true that if you love something enough you will do anything to be successful at it? This is called your motivation checker by the way!

Step 2: Start with the end in mind. I want you to think about the Big Picture – what is it you really want to achieve? The big end goal; perhaps it’s building up a multi-million pound business; or retiring at the age of 30; or spending 50% of your time with your friends and family and 50% making money; or having freedom and choice in your life every day…Now write 3 or 4 pages of how your life will be in the future when you have achieved this and get real clarity (write it in present tense as if you have already achieved it).

Step 3: This year’s Goals. Next write down all the things you really want to achieve this year and select the top 10 that mean the most to you (making sure they fit in with your future vision, your Big Picture of course).

Step 4: Write each one out as a separate goal. If you need help with this, then check out my Goal Setting template, or email for 1-2-1 help. You could also attend this year’s Goal Setting Event 2012 where you will be guided through the process of goal setting, set some yourself on the evening and leave with a plan for 2012. Step 5: Take action. For each goal write a list of everything you can think of that you would need to do to take you from where you are today, to achieving that goal. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how you are going to do some of these steps, you can always get help nearer the time. (This is best done on a spreadsheet where you can easily move the lines around – see Step 6).

Step 6: Prioritise your Action list – put each goal list in order of what you will need to do first. (For example if your goal is to have a new business up and running by May 2012  – then you might need to: select your products or service, do market research, create a business plan, get your finances in place, get the legals sorted, ask for help from others who run a business, get marketing, go networking, etc…Now you might have gone networking first, but without a business plan, product or service you have nothing to sell!

Doing this task is vital to your success, and can save you masses of time and ultimately hundreds or thousands of pounds too!!

Step 7: Commit to your plan and put your actions into your diary or planning system, stating when you will achieve each small step. Get some help to keep you accountable.

Step 8: Mindset. Of course creating your goals and action list is only part of the story – if you don’t have your Mind-set aligned for success; then there is very little chance of you actually achieving any of your goals! There are a variety of tools and techniques you can use to help you believe in what you are doing, get a clear positive outlook and support you in the right way. Using visualisation techniques to keep you connected and motivated towards your goals can really help too.

Step 9: Get support – find someone to keep you accountable, either a professional (coach, mentor etc) or a work colleague. Once you have told people about your goals, then they can help you keep on top on each small step you take.

Step 10: Celebrate at every stage. It’s all too easy to forget this part! It is so important to celebrate each step that you take on your journey, this will really help you to stay focused and motivated and drive you forwards.
